Fast Rope Extraction System

Used by Special Forces worldwide, this fast rope extraction system (FRES) enables rapid, safe extraction of ground troops by an assault helicopter, such as the Chinook, without landing.

Engineered for Strength and Performance

  • The rope has a minimum breaking force of 74.65 kN and can support up to 8 fully-equipped personnel.
  • The rope can be manufactured to order in custom lengths.
  • The system can be used with any suitable attachment fitting depending on the aircraft requirement.
  • Two rope options are available: either black 8-plait rope in 45mm diameter, or white standard rope in 11mm diameter.
  • Rope eye splice for attachment to the helicopter or TIES frame accepts attachment point of 50mm diameter minimum.
  • Troop attachment loops made of a 12mm diameter, multi-plait nylon are fitted onto the main rope.

Optional lanyards, 3.1 m (10 ft) long, fitted with karabiners at each end enable troops to retrieve loads from the ground.

Troop Insertion and Extraction System (TIES)

To support the usage of FRES HDT Airborne Systems enhanced the design and manufactures the Troop Insertion and Extraction System (TIES), currently certified only for the Chinook Helicopter Mk2/2a but that can be developed to suit other helicopters with a rear ramp. The TIES is a metal frame that is fitted to the rear ramp of the helicopter to accommodate activities such as abseiling, fast roping, and troop extraction by rope or ladder. The aluminum alloy portal frame features 5 attachments with built-in Quick Release Mechanisms (QRM) for added safety and speed. It mounts to the rear ramp of the helicopter and folds down via gas strut to permit the ramp to close.
